Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega’s answer to Mario – he was first created in 1991 and was Sega’s Mascot, much like Mario was Nintendo’s mascot. He featured on many games throughout Sega’s long history and has become one of the most recognisable characters in video game history.
Since his first game was released Sonic the Hedgehog has gone to to sell more than 70 million games and in 2005 he was inducted into the Walk of Game alongside other vide game characters such as Mario and Link from Nintendos Zelda series of games.

Sonic was created by artist Naoto Oshima, designer Hirokazu Yasuharah and programmer Yuji Naka. Sonic is a 15 year old hedgehog, who has the ability to run at super sonic speeds and attack enemies by is trademark ball attack where Sonic curls into a ball and rotates at a super speed while his spikes do major damage on his enemies.
He has proved so popular that there have been numerous spin offs and Sonic has featured in comic books, cartoons and even a feature film. His popularity has declined in the modern video game industry however Sega still produce Sonic games on the most current consoles. There is still hope that one day there will be an amazing Sonic game to rival even his first entries into the console video game market.
Sonic was such a popular character that in 2011 he was voted 10th most popular video games characters of all time.
