Water for wildlife: Macquarie Marshes Photographer Tom Rayner’s new book takes you on a journey through the Macquarie Marshes and their revival from years of drought, to brimming wetland oasis. By Tom Rayner. January 30, 2015. Reading Time: 2 Minutes. Print this page. Tundra swans, snow geese, and ducks, as well as black bear and a variety of birds and animals can be seen at Mackay Island. The hard to spot Swainson’s warbler, recognized by its long pink toes, enjoys the wet woods and swamps. Helping Whidbey Island Pets and Their People. Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation (WAIF) is a non-profit organization which was formed in 1990 in an effort to help Whidbey Island’s homeless companion animals. WAIF is dedicated to providing food, shelter, veterinary care, and nurturing to displaced pets until loving homes can be found. New Island’s natural environment and its wildlife suffered a great deal due to the exploits of man prior to 1972. Because of extensive stock grazing and the introduction of non-native grasses, the island presents an interesting example of the re-establishment of native vegetation following the removal of this stock. The wildlife elsewhere on the island is even more overwhelming and fascinating. It is a world away from anything you can see in continental USA, with new species of plants and animals waiting to be discovered in every corner of the island. Swimming the Kona Coast.
